K-12 Outreach

Georgia Tech recognizes its responsibility to enhance the curriculum of K-12 schools, especially in math, science and technology, in order to ensure that all children can have the knowledge necessary to succeed.

Institute Partnerships works closely with six primary and secondary schools that are near the Georgia Tech campus. By pooling the resources of already existing programs on campus, Institute Partnerships can fulfill the needs of these schools for tutors, technology assistance and higher-education interaction.

To provide tutors, Institute Partnerships has partnered with CEISMC (the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing) programs to install math tutors at both Bethune and Centennial Place elementary schools, as well as Kennedy Middle School and Therrell School of Health Sciences and Research . The department has also encouraged numerous student groups to volunteer with K-12 students to serve as mentors and tutors. Two work study students have been placed at ANCS as a result of IP working with CEISMC.

As an example of technology assistance, Institute Partnerships has garnered the support of Johnson Controls to serve as corporate sponsor of a full-time Co-op student each semester to provide technology support at Centennial Place Elementary.

It is becoming increasingly important for primary and secondary education to interact with institutes of higher education. As one of the premier research universities, Georgia Tech promotes interaction with K-12 students through a variety of math and science enrichment programs, tours of laboratories, and field trips for K-12 classes. See the Georgia Tech Tours and the K-12 and Beyond Booklet for more information.
