5th Ward Boys Association Mentoring Program

Mission Statement

The strength of our mission lies in its simplicity. To serve boys who live in public housing in the 5th Ward area. To put it directly, these boys are underdogs. They are most in need of help and, at the same time, the most difficult to help. Our unique program blends the personal (and lasting) influence of mentoring with the discipline (and fun) of Scouting. It is a caring and challenging combination that encourages moral values and personal responsibility. That aims to turn boys away from a potential life of crime and toward life as self-reliant husbands, fathers and citizens.

To be a mentor is to be a friend. Weekly, one-hour meetings are held at the workplace and arranged around the mentorŐs schedule. These meetings provide a safe refuge where strong emotional bonds quickly form. Mentors introduce the boys to the work environment promote a positive attitude toward school and homework, and encourage recreational reading. Mentors receive quarterly report cards, test scores, and meet with the boy's teacher once a year. We ask each mentor to make a one to three-year commitment. All costs are transportation are the responsibility of 5th Ward boys Association.
